Some merchants, such as restaurants and gas stations, may request that a pre-authorization hold is placed on a transaction to ensure that enough funds are available to cover the entire amount (including tax and tip at a restaurant). The temporary hold remains until the merchant sends the final amount of the transaction and requests payment. Once the transaction settles, it will be adjusted to the correct amount.
